Austria has launched the Industrial Hydrogen Valley (HI2-Valley) initiative to advance industrial decarbonization and accelerate the transition to clean energy. The project aims to establish a large-scale green hydrogen ecosystem, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting energy-intensive industries. With an initial European Union grant of €20 million, the initiative will be rolled out in industrial zones across Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia.

The long-term investment is projected to reach €578 million by 2030, with a targeted annual production capacity of over 18,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. By 2028, the project aims to achieve an initial production of approximately 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. The initiative encompasses a comprehensive green hydrogen value chain, including production, transportation, storage, and industrial application. It will be implemented through 17 sub-projects, with six projects each in Styria and Upper Austria and five in Carinthia.

These projects will focus on integrating green hydrogen into various industrial and energy sectors. A breakdown of the initiative’s focus areas indicates that 56 percent of the hydrogen will be allocated for industrial use, 23 percent for energy, and 21 percent for mobility applications. Key industries expected to benefit include steel, cement, and raw materials sectors, which require significant energy input and are seeking sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.

The HI2-Valley project aligns with Austria’s broader clean energy strategy and the European Union’s hydrogen development framework. The initiative is designed to facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources, reduce dependency on conventional fuels, and contribute to the EU’s carbon neutrality goals. Austria’s industrial hubs are expected to play a crucial role in scaling up green hydrogen deployment.

The initiative is also expected to attract additional private and public investments, strengthening the country’s position in the European hydrogen economy. As the project progresses, stakeholders anticipate that HI2-Valley will serve as a model for other hydrogen valleys in Europe, fostering cross-border collaborations and driving technological advancements in hydrogen production and utilization. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
